SSeasoning cast iron is a crucial process that every cast iron pan owner should be familiar with. A well-seasoned cast iron pan creates a naturally non-stick surface, making cooking and cleaning a breeze.

In addition, a well-seasoned cast iron pan can also enhance the flavor of your food, adding a unique depth that can’t be replicated with other cookware. In this guide, we’ll take you through the step-by-step process of seasoning your cast iron pan to perfection, so you can enjoy its many benefits for years to come.

METHOD

STEP 1: Preheat your oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C).

STEP 2: Clean Your Pan

Clean your cast iron pan with hot water and a stiff brush or sponge. Don’t worry about using soap – I am sure you have heard horror stories about it. We want all of the old gunk and oils stripped away so we get a nice clean finish. Scrub away!

STEP 3: Dry your pan

Dry your pan thoroughly with a clean towel or by placing it on a low heat on your stovetop until completely dry.

STEP 4: Apply Oil

Apply a thin layer of oil to the surface of the pan. When I say thin, I mean thin. It should shine but not be pooling. You can use any oil with a high smoke point, such as avocado, vegetable oil, canola oil, or grapeseed oil.

Use a paper towel to spread the oil evenly over the entire surface of the pan, including the handle and any ridges or crevices. Make sure to pick up any drips.

STEP 5: Bake the Pan

Bake the pan at 400 degrees for one hour. Place the pan upside down in the preheated oven. Place a sheet of aluminum foil on the lower rack to catch any drips.

STEP 5: Cool and store

Turn off the oven and allow the pan to cool in the oven. Once cool, remove the pan and store it in a dry place. Your pan may need more than one seasoning to achieve a perfect seasoning.

Time to iron out your recipes!

Seasoning your cast iron pan is a simple yet important step that can make a huge difference in your cooking experience. With the right care and attention, your cast iron pan can become a cherished family heirloom that you’ll use and enjoy for years to come.
